Why
Biology?
Industrial manufacturing is the foundation of modern society - without the ceaseless production of foods, plastics, fuels, and chemicals, our way of life would not be feasible. At Biosphere, we envision a future where material abundance is sustainably manufactured via the combination of engineered biology and abundant clean energy.
Biology is the universe's dominant manufacturing technology, channeling carbon and energy into the world we see around us. With modern biotechnology, humanity has developed an unprecedented ability to reprogram biological systems to create essential goods. We can use this toolset to efficiently manufacture the products that power our world.
The seeds of the biomanufacturing revolution are already in place. Today, it’s almost guaranteed that a man-made bioreactor produced most of the lysine in your body and nearly all of the citric acid at your grocery store. Over the coming years and decades, companies will leverage biology to produce the spandex in our clothes, the fertilizer on our farms, and entirely new products across foods, materials, and medicines.
However, biomanufacturing has been hamstrung by the industry's reliance on 70 year old reactor designs. In 1940’s, Pfizer developed the modern bioreactor to produce penicillin, and we’re still using that same basic system in our factories today. This production bottleneck has become obvious to everyone in the $100b bioproducts industry.
Biosphere will break this production bottleneck and accelerate progress toward a future of global material abundance, powered by biology.
Join the Team
Biosphere was founded in 2022 by Brian Heligman and Arye Lipman, with significant backing from world-class investors Lower Carbon, VXI Capital, Founders Fund, and GS Futures. They’re now leading a small, passionate team with expertise in manufacturing everything from commercial-scale fermentation products and robotic greenhouses, to thin-film semiconductors and high throughput bioinformatics pipelines.
